Dan Hamre | Defense Attorney

Originally from Minnesota, Dan moved to Montgomery Alabama and worked at the Montgomery County District attorney’s office while attending undergraduate studies at the Auburn University at Montgomery. While working full-time as a legal assistant at the law firm of Graddick and Belser, PC, Dan graduated with a degree in history in 1995. Dan then attended the University of Hamline Law School, graduating with his Juris Doctor degree in 1998.
Dan began his legal career in Texas as an associate at a criminal defense firm in Austin where he represented clients charged with DWI in Travis and Williamson Counties. In 2000 Dan was hired by the Travis County Attorney’s Office. Starting as an intake attorney, Dan moved up and has held virtually every position at the Travis County Attorney’s Office from lowest to highest. The leadership positions Dan has held include:
- Court chief of the Family Violence Court
- Court Chief of a DWI Court
- Director of the Criminal Division
- And most recently First Assistant Travis County Attorney
Dan’s experience as a leader, prosecutor, and supervisor has given him a unique perspective on how the criminal justice system works in Texas and in Travis County in particular. He has worked over the years with countless public officials, defense attorneys, judges, and law enforcement agencies. He has handled thousands of cases including DWI, Assault, Domestic Violence, drug cases, grand jury investigations, theft, and property crimes.
